your student resources during covid-19

the coronavirus aid, relief, and economic security (cares) act was signed into law on march 27, 2020, providing nearly $2 trillion in financial assistance to individuals, families, and businesses impacted by the outbreak of covid-19 and the subsequent shutdowns implemented in response to the global pandemic. the cares act also established the higher education emergency relief fund (heerf), which provides emergency financial assistance for students and institutions affected by covid-19, as defined by the cares act. higher education institutions have been directed to use no less than 50% of funds received to provide emergency financial aid grants to students.

copper mountain college (cmc) acknowledges that it has signed and returned, to the department of education, the certification and agreement and the assurance that the institution has used no less than 50 percent of the funds received under section 18004(a)(1) of the cares act to provide emergency financial aid grants to students.

cmc was allocated $1,372,962 in federal cares act grants. cmc is required to distribute $686,481 (50%) to students. the remaining 50% is to be used for expenditures related to the covid-19 response plan for the district.

as a federal requirement for use of these funds, at least 50% will be given to students in the form of direct grants. cmc submitted and received $699,000 on may 7, 2020, and distributed the funds to students on may 8, 2020, based on their fafsa information.

students who were eligible for fafsa or have filed for fafsa received a cares grant. copper mountain college distributed the cares grant funds to 1488 students out of 1553.

to meet the cares requirement, cmc established two tiers for disbursing the funds:

  • first tier of students with the highest need received $500 (efc 0-999 received $500)
  • Second tier of students received $400 (EFC 1000 + & those students eligible to file a FAFSA)

financial aid

students will continue to have access to financial aid resources, including those from student loans.

for federal student financial aid (pell grants, federal supplemental grants, federal workstudy and federal direct loans) guidance will be issued by the u.s. department of education as it becomes available. please see the guidance for interruptions of study related to coronavirus (covid-19) for information about federal work study.

community college promise grants: there is no impact to eligibility for the promise grants, and no penalty if a promise grant recipient is unable to complete all attempted coursework in a single semester. promise grant recipients must make satisfactory progress to retain the grants. students should work with their local college campus to determine any actions needed to retain these grants.

california college promise program: students that typically are not eligible for other types of financial aid may be eligible for a waiver of enrollment fees if they qualify as “first-year, first-time” students. as of today the law required students to maintain full-time status to retain eligibility from term to term. there is some flexibility on the number of units for students with disabilities.

cal grants: the california student aid commission has not issued guidance to date on any changes to the cal grant eligibility requirements. we will post updates here as we receive them.

student success and completion grant: students must be taking either 12 units or 14 units at the time of payment. if the student reduces the number of units after being paid for the term, there is no impact for that term, or for following terms.
