welcome fall 2020 students
dear cmc students,
welcome to fall 2020 ate copper mountian college. we continue to truly be in unprecedented times. while the world continues to look different, i am hopeful as we look toward the future that we will be better from the lessons that we are learning. you have each already shown your resilience, adaptability, and grace through this time. please keep it up and we will all get through this chapter together! please know that we will be updating cmc practices and efforts in covid mitigation as more information becomes available so please watch your emails.
the following areas are closed to students:
- student activity center
- veterans resource center
all students and employees are expected to wear a mask/face covering over their mouth and nose during all in-person interactions and/or possible engagement with colleagues, students, or community members. signage has been posted to remind people that masks are required on campus.
face coverings are required for employees and students when engaged in work, whether at the workplace or performing work or school activities off-site, when:
1. interacting in-person with anyone,
2. or when working or learning in any space visited by members of the public, regardless of whether anyone from the public is present at the time.
we are continuing to encourage remote interactions rather than in-person interactions where possible. students may use the library for access to the internet, research, and to study while meeting social distancing and masking expectations. common areas where students may congregate such as the student activity center and the veterans resource center will continue to remain closed.
students who have questions on face-covering accommodations should contact dean of student services, jennifer o’donnell.
we all need to continue to be vigilant in doing our best to protect each other from covid-19. we will continue rotating staff schedules to minimize contact where operationally feasible. we do need to make sure that we stay home when we do not feel well. the use of hand sanitizer and proper handwashing must be done.
we should also consider the possibility that we may need to shift again to fully remote if needed. we will also need to continue to plan that there will be students and employees who may need to self-isolate.
employees and students
before arriving at work or school each day, every employee or student should take the responsibility to conduct a self-check and determine if they are showing any covid19 symptoms.

it is the shared responsibility of all of us to keep each other safe. employees and students who have symptoms should not attend in person or if they become sick during the day should immediately be separated from other individuals and sent home. employees and students who develop symptoms outside of work should notify their supervisor or instructor and stay home.
given the latest guidance from the state, there will not be any in-person lectures at least until san bernardino county is no longer on the covid watch list.
for in-person laboratories, it is suggested that all instructors require students to maintain a fixed seating arrangement for the duration of the academic term. this is to ensure social distancing requirements, and also provides a means of contact tracing of students near any student that may test positive for covid-19.
it is suggested that to eliminate multiple students coming in contact with door handles, the instructors will be directed to unlock and open the door and to utilize a floor wedge to keep the door open until the start of the class.
at the conclusion of each laboratory session, the instructor will utilize the floor wedge to keep the exit area open until all students depart to minimize contact with the door handle.
instructors are also asked to end class on time. our goal is to allow our custodial staff some time to clean between sections. each laboratory will also have cleaning supplies if there is an area that students or staff feel need additional attention.
if there is shared equipment within the class, please use the supplies to sanitize the shared equipment between users.
classrooms with a known covid-19 exposure will be quarantined until the cleaning protocols outlined below can be completed.
in-person laboratory course sections that have a confirmed covid-19 case must move to remote instruction for a minimum of 14 days from the confirmation of the case.
faculty must provide flexibility and adjustments to students who may self-isolate. faculty should establish communication criteria required of students to address covid-related needs. this should be included in the syllabus, if possible.
hvac economizers have been adjusted to increase the outside air volume. doors and windows may be left open at the discretion of the faculty and staff. the air filtration system has been upgraded to provide the characteristics of a merv 13 rating.
due to high heat, some of these changes may need to be adjusted to maintain a comfortable learning environment.
travel and fieldtrips
non-essential travel is not allowed by faculty, staff, or students.
if a student, faculty, or staff member experiences symptoms of covid-19 they are to stay at home, seek medical attention, contact their primary care provider, or make an appointment to be tested. sick faculty, staff, or students should not return to any of the college facilities, or end isolation until they have met cdc’s criteria to discontinue home isolation. when you can be around others (end home isolation) depends on different factors for different situations.
please find cdc’s recommendations for your situation below.
if the district is aware of individuals that have had close contact with a person diagnosed with covid-19, that individual will be instructed to stay home and self-monitor for symptoms and follow cdc guidance if symptoms develop.
it is important to remember that anyone who has close contact with someone diagnosed with covid-19 should stay home for 14 days after exposure based on the time it takes to develop illness.
employees or students may have been exposed if they have been in “close contact” of someone who is/was infected, which is defined as being within approximately 6 feet (2 meters) of a person with covid-19 for a prolonged period of time.
what counts as close contact?
• you were within 6 feet of someone who has covid-19 for a total of 15 minutes or more
• you provided care at home to someone who is sick with covid-19
• you had direct physical contact with the person (hugged or kissed them)
• you shared eating or drinking utensils
• they sneezed, coughed, or somehow got respiratory droplets on you
close contact exposed employees and students should self-isolate and follow the cdc recommended steps.
students with questions regarding assignments should check with their instructor.
clean and disinfect
areas that have been documented as being exposed to a person confirmed to have had covid 19 will be quarantined for at least 24 hours per cdc guidelines. if possible, a longer quarantine period of up to 72 hours or longer will be used before the disinfecting process begins. signs will be placed on all entrance doors, and all perimeter spaces will be locked. after the quarantine period is completed, custodial staff, using appropriate ppe will disinfect commonly used hard surfaces. hvac systems will bring in maximum outside air to flush the building/spaces. once disinfecting has been completed, custodial staff will complete a deep cleaning of the spaces.
flexibility and adaptability
as guidance is updated from the state, cdc, local health officials, and the community college chancellors office, we will continue to modify and learn the best practices and protocols for managing this pandemic.
remember that we have not done this before. we need to work together more than we ever have before. we will learn together, practice together, and succeed together for the best learning environment for our student’s success and the health and safety of all of us.

student services has remote capabilities to serve students in all areas and departments, so that you do not have to come to campus for registration, admission, records, and counseling services. however, if there is an educational need to be on campus, please respect the following guidelines:
- a mask must be worn at all times. we encourage students to bring their own masks. if you do not have one on hand, they will be available for you in the foyer to put on before entering the student services space.
- while in the building, please use the 6 ft. social distancing markers that will be located on the floor to minimize crowding. capacity will be monitored and regulated as needed.
- we ask that you call or email admissions and records before you come in, to see if it is something we can assist you with remotely to save you a trip to the campus.

the office of instruction has remote capabilities to serve students for most of your needs so that you do not have to come to campus for grade appeals, grievances, pre-requisite challenges etc. however, if there is a compelling need to be on campus, please respect the following guidelines:
- a mask must be worn at all times. we encourage students to bring their own masks. if you do not have one on hand, they will be available for you at the entrance to the office of instruction.
- we ask that you call or email before coming in to see if we can assist you remotely. any matters discussing your student record should originate on your cmc email address.
